What We're Reading

We are big readers in this house.  Well, I used to be anyway, before I became responsible for the well- being of a house and family, but I still manage to ignore duty for a while and read every now and then.  I thought I'd start sharing the books we've been reading around here in case anyone is looking for book ideas for themselves or their kids.  So, hopefully this will be a regular feature of the blog.  We'll see.  I'm clearly not a consistent blogger.

Maren (10) -
Just as a side note, I no longer read everything that my daughter reads because a) she's a faster reader than I am and I can't keep up, b) I trust her to put books down that she feels uncomfortable with because she has done so several times, and c) some of the books she likes to read are just lame.  So not all of these books have been approved by me.  This is just what she's reading right now.

She just finished up the "Keys to the Kingdom" series by Garth Nix and proclaimed it "awesome".  So I guess that means she liked it.

She's read the first three Emily Windsnap books and liked them a lot.

She read "The Secret Zoo" by Bryan Chick and said it was good.

She's rereading "The Candy Shop Wars" by Brandon Mull.

Joshua (8) -
Joshua rarely gives me his opinions of the books he reads.  If he finishes them, I figure he liked them, since there are many books he doesn't finish because they just don't keep his attention.

Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures #9 created by Jeff Brown, written by Josh Greenhut

Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Babe Ruth Baseball by David Adler

The Encyclopedia Brown series - These books I know he really liked because he keeps asking to get more at the library, and because we caught him reading them under his blankets with a flashlight a couple of times with these ones (which we pretend to be mad about, but really we're thinking "yay! he's reading!")

And he just finished the 3rd Harry Potter, but we won't let him read the 4th one, because we're just mean like that.  Actually, it's because he gets nightmares easily and we're pretty sure he can't handle it yet.

current favorite picture books of the 5 and 3 year old:

The Seven Silly Eaters

Too Many Frogs

Any of the Pete the Cat books (nathan especially loves these)

Abiyoyo

Me  -

I'm currently reading "Pathfinder" by Orson Scott Card.  One of my friends on Goodreads said she liked it more than Enders' Game, and that seemed so ridiculous to me that I thought I should see if she was right.  I will let you know.

I'm also reading "The God who Weeps" by Terryl and Fiona Givens.  This is my non-ficiont reading for the time being.

    1. I first read Enders' Game in junior high and loved it, so it holds a special place in my heart as the first science fiction I remember reading. I'm skeptical that pathfinder will be better, but we shall see. :)

  2. Thanks for writing these down! I think I'll check out the Encyclopedia Brown series for T.J.! I never know what to get for him...boys are so different from girls! As for me...I'm still trying to get through last months book club book! If only my reading time wasn't in competition with my sewing time...

    1. I have a hard time finding books for Joshua too. With Maren, I'm pretty sure if it's something I liked that she will like it too, but with Joshua I have a hard time knowing.

  3. I wish I could find time to read! How do you do it? lol My girls are currently in love with the Skippyjon Jones books. We are also reading BFG by Roald Dahl as our read-aloud right now. Eli loves all the Eric Carle books although our Brown bear, Brown Bear has gone missing and it was his favorite! I can't wait until the girls are better readers, and can do it on their own!

    1. I really don't have much time to read. Sometimes I just ignore the house work, put a movie on for the kids, and read for an hour. It's not great for the mess in my house, but it's good for my sanity. :)

We love the skippyjon jones books too! It is fun when the kids read books on their own, and they get excited about the stories they are reading, but my favorite time of day is still when I have the kids on the couch with me and we're reading picture books together. My mother in law always has said if she could do one thing differently she would read more with her children (and she did read to them a lot anyway)

  4. My eight year old is enjoying the Who Was series...a good way to sneak some history into her reading. I just finished Elly in Bloom and am giving away two signed copies of the book this week. Stop by and enter!
